All signs need to be noticed in order to be effective. This is especially true of business signage and commercial signage. You want people to know where your business is and to be attracted to it and enticed to come inside. But getting noticed is not always about having giant, flashy, illuminated signs that light up the San Diego night’s sky. Size, illumination, and attractive design are all key, but so is basic placement. You need to install your sign where it has the best chance of being seen. But sometimes you are severely limited by the environment around you.
Let’s say you run a small retail business in La Jolla. And let’s say you’ve installed a brilliantly designed business sign on the storefront of your building facing straight forward. Who is going to see it? People directly across the street from you, sure, but will anybody else? People walking on the same side of the street as your business won’t see it unless they look up just when they pass you by. That does not make for very effective signage. But a projecting sign sticks out (projects) from your building to display a sign panel perpendicularly to your business. Projecting sign panels are typically double-sided, so people can see your projecting sign coming from either direction.
